A profit generating business with a social cause is called Social Entrepreneurship.

The concept is simple and if applied it can be profitable to you as well as the needy.

Examples : 1. There are 51 ambulances running in Maharashtra where if you call the ambulance rich have to pay for it and poor get the service for free.

2. A courier service run by deaf .. thus gives them employment a does profit as well.

There can be many other similar things.. We just need to be thoughtful and decide how we want to help ourself along with the society.

What is your take on it??

Nice article. Thanks Sujatha for sharing. There is need to provide employment to poor people rather than charity.social Entrepreneurship could play an important role in eradicating poverty from our country.

Idea is quite good, to bring these things in to notice. but social cause is for helping people. That means u r commenting that people who are in education field and charging high fee structure r doing good. let social cause be socially not a business....
Why does a "social cause" always has to begin with poor and under privileged. There are already millions concerned about them (Its working or not is a different story). But what about those who are not "under privileged" n still struggling, just for an eg. we now have large numbers of MBAs and Engineers but the competency has declined.May be how people can contribute is- by opening doors for students to take trainings and actually help them learn the practicalities. As a student I have seen people indifferent to do that.So just my take on the whole thing! :P

These are all excellent ideas. Here is another idea for social entrepreneurship: water is consumed by everyone everyday. It is considered as an important necessity.Rain fall and all this water goes to waste. Not everyone can pay their monthly water bill, causing the poor people to be disconnected. We can start a business by installing water tanks in homes business schools ect. We can connect pipe lines to the drains, along with purifiers to keep the water clear of dirt or debris. That would help save lots of money and lower the levels of water used to hydrate plants, washing of cars etc. I donot have money to start this business but would like to partner with anyone who thinks it's a great idea.

Your first example is not workable. What will be the criteria to prove that somebody is rich and somebody is poor? I think nothing should be given at free of cost. If you want to help the poor ones, first of all those people should help the Govt. by family planning. You should not forger that there are always limitations for government.
I want to congratulate you for your second example as it is really good. I will try to find another examples for the Social Entrepreneurship and will also try for its real use in our society. Thanks for referral Sujata!

Well idea but dreams are living in mind only when your eyes are closed.Every good thing is hard and every bed thing is easy.Help, cooperation, socialism and unity work are not possible for each busyness. In the primary stage some group should be created, when other will see or know then they will start join and so on...this will get success and it is the basic of entire society world.

The step like this (social entrepreneurship)is really appreciating because it helps the pioneer and many others with him. It is a confidence building step and there is a big need of such steps to prosper.

Yes, it would be my pleasure to share my experience in this as we are running a social entrepreneurship business from past 6 years, we have got the best business plan 2009 from Deshpanday center for social entrepreneurship & Technoserve USA for our organisation GLOBAL HR Consultants which is basically to help to hire the rural candidates for jobs. As a part of our business plan We train the B.com candidates from villages in Payroll processing and hire them in our satellite centers set up in villages. This gives them the reputed employment & enjoy the equal salaries that they would get in any major cities. :)

Hey,
Do not you see the visibility in Govt policy, example. For OC/BC application cost may be Rs 500/ & for SC/ST, it is Rs 200/. Other name poised is Social entrepreneurship, purely, as a Business. But, the concept is well received in the Govt policy in various forms.
Some Engineering college in TN, allotted few seats , totally free of cost, to poor who does well & aspire to continue studies.
Many Marriage Halls are open free for poor who are unable to conduct marriage. But, affulent is to pay heavy rent.
Thanks for referral Sujatha.

I was thinking of similar since long, its a best place to share this idea i guess.

Someone can invest in garments only for third gender, this way they themselves can earn money, don't trouble the public and their social status will also be improved.

Gautam Buddha has always advocated 'Samyak Aajeevika' meaning earning money through ethical means. If we can help others in earning process, nothing like that.Going by this principles occupations like wine shop, manufacturing wine, running casino are all un-ethical means of making money. TATA is planning to manufacture refrigerator-size machine which can convert plain water into electricity. Such idea can be helpful to large population giving some monetary benefit to manufacturer.Congratulations to Sujatha for such a nice topic!

Nice article sujatha this is the one through which we can attain good correleation between poor and rich and explore new ideas which poor can have but due to lack of money many times it wont be possible to implement them like I have a idea of planning a medical waste disposal facility in my district where lots of hospitals are there they wont properly dispose it which creates nuisance and percolate into gtround water which contaminate it many harmful pathogens and as a Environmental Engineeer I know its consequences which are really severe and most of the times we have to rely on ground water due to scarse surface water avilable, this will lead to spread of very bad epedemics which will cause mass destruction I dont know what these politiciams will do my saving so much money if they cant use this money to treat the disease which they and their family members get due to all this nuisnaceI hope someone have concern on this is saving the humanity.

Any business has to be profit generating without which it can not sustain. Can I categorize other businesses as non- social entrepreneurships. Entrepreneur and entrepreneurship are two beautiful words in English language and let us not add any adjectives to them.

What you are saying is the strategy that one adopts in carrying out business that one chooses. Social cause is embedded in every business in one way or other. Taxes we pay is for a social cause. Every business activity is so interdependent that finally leads to satisfying needs or wants of you and me. The ultimate purpose of any business is to satisfy their chosen customers. The man who pays for a product or service will not be thinking of how it got done ( that is the work of an entrepreneur) but whether it satisfies his need, is it available at the right time and right place and is it within his reach. This is where we need to learn from Bill gates and Warren Buffett. The enterprising ideas and skill made them to earn billions and social instinct in them is making them to give way all ( 99% of his wealth; Buffett) money to help the humanity all over the globe. Every business has a social purpose.

Thanks, Sujata. Social Enterprise is big in Britain and is understood as businesses that solve social problems. It is well endorsed: C K Prahalad popularized the idea with his book 'Fortune at the bottom of the pyramid' and Bill Gates labeled this 'Creative Capitalism' in one of the WEF in Davos. Further, the Nobel prize awarded to Professor Md Younus and Grameen Bank for the micro-credit revolution in Bangladesh (and later in many other countries) has put social enterprise in focus.

The essential idea is that profit motive can solve big social problems more effectively than pure charitable intent. I shall say Amul is possibly the best example in Indian context. I also keep reading about Bunker Roy and his Barefoot College, though I shall think that this is more at the social activism end of the spectrum.

In the end, I shall share a video link - an interview given by CK Prahalad before his death, where he talks about many other subjects, but mainly about his BoP idea. It is indeed worth watching (despite the 20 minutes running time) for it contains fascinating insights about the nature of social businesses. http://www.thinkers50.com/video/33

Not sure about the 1st one... as the concept of distributing something free always gets plagued with corruption and laziness.

But  for the 2nd one. No doubt, there are a lot of work that can be excelled by a many categories of society ( say, having some disability, or got separated from the society for some reason ) , which even the richer groups won't like to compete into. A similar category is of eunuchs who otherwise beg in colonies, trains and footpaths etc. A govt initiative can help them in a similar way.

Thanks.

Social Entrepreneurship -that is a nice name given to a great cause.I am sure that if the rich are really willing,a lot of miracles can happen. It really can uplift the society and we can definitely witness a lot of miracles. We have a lot of evil in the society and if the Rajas-I mean the ex Minister and his cronies help in, we will be able to wipe out poverty..
