Most of us are a part of some social network or the other. Social networking has revolutionized the way we communicate and share information with one another in today's society.

A marketer is absolutely myopic if he does not see the the wide opportunity of marketing which lies in social networks. Now social networking has become very crucial and important to businesses.

" YOUR BUSINESS PROSPECTS COULD BE JUST A MOUSE CLICK AWAY"

These networks allow you to locate business opportunities as well as find companies that may be able to serve your business-to-business needs.

What a marketer wants?

The needs of the customer ? That too directly from them ? Social networks give this advantage to marketers.

Marketers can find the right set of people with whom the product/ service is to identified with, through a social network.

Various social networking communities such as Myspace, linkedin, facebook, VisiblePath, SoFlow, Orkut gives marketers different segments of people to focus on.

For example,

LinkedIn has become my favorite online social network for business purposes. It's easy to view profiles, get connected, and even recruit potential new hires. There is also a recommendation feature that allows you to see what others say about an individual.

Similarly, SoFLow , Prestigious, cream of the crop professionals. Great features, fantastic focus groups, and awesome business networking opportunities. This network launched in July 2004 with great buzz, but seem to have lost the excitement since then.

Element of interaction

A marketer can interact through a social network with

Customers and Consumers: People who will benefit from what you do, consume or buy your products or services, and rave about you to their friends.

Others Within Your Industry: People with whom you can network, share resources and cross-promote with.

Media and Publishers: People who work for, or can influence, publications you would like to be mentioned in (e-zines, newspapers, Websites, etc).

Consultants: People who may want to hire or purchase products from you.

Event, Company or Organization representatives: People who operate businesses and associations that support your industry.

Will marketers take total advantage of the wide opportunities in social networks?

Good article but most of what you have stated is yet to be proved. There is a lot of ground to cover before one can safely brand social networking sites as a good marketing tool. Reason being the paucity of time. Though i am connected to the internet while in office, i hardly get time to check my various mail id's, social sites, industry related sites etc. At best these sites are a good way to connect and stay in touch, one has to see how far it will serve the purpose of marketing. I find toostep to be better than linkedin.

People are still afraid to post business opportunities on Social Networking portals. More the direct opportunities posted on such portals, more the benefits

Nice article. I fully believe in what others have to say about social networking sites - yet to be proved. On the other hand, a professional community is more useful and much more to offer than such social networks.

It is more important to be among the right professionals to expect opportunities and explore the network for business.

I agree with Jaygopal Raghavan that toostep is definitely better than linkedin.

i feel there is a lot of difference between a social networking site and professional networking site and if at all the marketing objective is to be achieved it is through the professional network and not the social network.
