Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha Tuesday asked the central government for a special grant of Rs102 billion to implement her party's poll promise of giving free laptops to school and college students.

Jayalalitha, who met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the capital yesterday, submitted to him a memorandum detailing various schemes and the funds needed from the central government for implementing these.

According to the memorandum, over the next five years, the Tamil Nadu government envisages providing nearly 6.8 million laptops to students.

Financial implications

"The total financial implication works out to approximately Rs102 billion. In the first year of the programme, 912,000 laptop computers will be provided," the memorandum notes. It added poor students need to be equipped to participate in the emerging market.

It is good investment for India's bright future, so govt should pay at least 50% of her demand.

This generation is our backbone for future! She is looking to educate (not talking about literacy - read and write) 6.8 million students to compete in the world market! A novel way to make them self-reliant and responsive citizens. This is inclusive growth! This demographic dividend can be exploited by this country in the next 20 years, as India has the advantage of having 65% of youth population in comparison to any country in the world. If we drive them, achieving super-power status is in their hands!
