The LiMo (Linux Mobile) Foundation is an alliance founded by Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics, and Vodafone in January 2007 to co-develop the LiMo Platform, a Linux-based mobile platform operating system. Since then a number of new members have joined the foundation.
And now in the team is Verizon!
Limo foundation has been a great competitor for Google's open source mobile initiative.
LiMo predates Google's OHA by 10 months. That hasn't stopped the two from stepping on each other's toes. Both are training their sights on the mobile industry and its warring fiefdoms of incompatible mobile platforms. Both want to have a Linux-based platform to help their developers speed new phones and applications to market.
More recently, LiMo boosters have seen Google as the real competitor, particularly as the search giant looks for ways to promote its search and other applications, placing them on as many mobile devices as possible.
VERIZON S IMPACT?
Verizon is the prize
catch. The No. 2 U.S. operator made the decision following
four to five months of discussions. Verizon will support the LiMo
platform on its current cellular network and a new nationwide network,
to be built on wireless spectrum won in a recent Federal Communications
Commission auction. The drawback? Verizon, as part of a broader move toward opening up
its network to many kinds of devices and mobile applications, is will likely support Android, too. Not all Verizon handsets will be
LiMo-powered. But our expectation is that a
substantial proportion will be. LiMo, which is a
not-for-profit entity and focuses on "middleware," or the "glue"
between software components, represents a more hands-off approach than
Android, which automatically incorporates Google applications, such as
Gmail and Google Maps. Operators typically prefer to have power over
those applications in their phones. Lets see who wins the war!!
