Darrel McDonald was walking with his dog in Lufkin, Texas, near the now well-known town of Nacogdoches. Minutes later, he was shaken by a series of explosions as the space shuttle Columbia broke up far overhead. "I looked up, but above me was only a broad contrail," says McDonald, coordinator of the Humanities Undergraduate Environmental Sciences (HUES) geographical information systems lab at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.
We all know about the columbia mishap. But how many of us know what exactly was the reason for the space shuttle to explode. Many scientist around the world thought of working on the reasons, But the problem was how to locate the fragments of the exploded space shuttle?
The answer to this was problem is GIS....
This terrible tragedy allowed a lot of people the opportunity to see how important geospatial technology can be in responding to emergency situations
So how GIS helps in locating parts at remote locations?
How exactly this technology works? actually it is working through a remote sensing system...What was done in this case was a programmed data dictionary for the GIS mapping software was developed and all the data fileds were loaded into 14 Trimble Navigation GPS units...The track back was immediate..
When the teams located debris, they logged the locations and other data on the GIS units. Then they returned to the lab where it was uploaded, the raw data into the GIS syste...
But one thing strikes me really hard..Do we need tragedy like this to happen to know the advantages of a technology..When we are the creators why cant we be the users for our own good... This is a biggest irony which is yet to be unfold!!! Can we???
