Yahoo is shutting down SpotM, the social networking service it began testing in India a year ago. Among its features  users could actually  keep certain friends secret from others and also correspond via text message without revealing their phone numbers.

On the SpotM website, Yahoo says it was “experimenting” with SpotM and says the site will no longer be accessible as of Tuesday.  It’s at least the third social network that Yahoo will have shut down, although the company has nevertheless said it is looking to make a buy in the social networking space. It shut down Yahoo 360 in July—and closed down Yahoo Mash last summer. It is seen that Yahoo has been steadily cutting non-core products under CEO Carol Bartz.

However, according to media reports, Yahoo India has not completely shelved its idea of having an India-specific social network. But from insider reports there is a possibilty of "Guru" which will be an Indian specific social networking website...

What are your thoughts on this latest development from yahoo, and what do you think about many Yahoo things which are being shelved like the Yahoo 360 and others.

May be they are focusing on their core areas now and with a new CEO at the helm they are making necessary changes that is required to give Yahoo that edge that it needs currently with the closing of not so popular like Yahoo 360, SpotM is the right step indeed, why focus on something which is not working, as the article says they have Plans for "Guru" which is a indian centric social networking sites, hope they have learnt something from SpotM and make those changes.

To be honest, I am not happy with this step taken by Yahoo. In SpotM, users could actually keep certain friends secret from others and also correspond via text message without revealing their phone numbers. Right now, Yahoo doesn't have any alternative to this, and users will be the actual losers of the benefits they were getting from SpotM
