Microsoft hit a home run with Windows Small Business Server. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to find small business servers not running the economically priced Windows operating system. The Windows Server 2003 platform provides stability, while the Exchange and SQL engines provide scalability. Wizards, meanwhile, simplify administration. When deploying Windows Small Business Server, or any small business network, most every implementation is optimized if you keep the following 10 elements in mind. 1. Servers aren’t always necessary AMI Research reports that of 68.5 million small businesses worldwide, more than 21 million have multiple PCs but no server. That figure can be found in Mic...

Most serious attackers aren't going to advertise their intentions by performing a broad scan—the smartest attackers will try to come in under your detection radar. In this edition of Security Solutions, Mike Mullins discusses why attackers prefer slow scanning, examines the tools they use, and tells you how to defend against this low-and-slow approach. There are a lot of security tools out there that will scan a wide range of ports and IP addresses. An intrusion detection system (IDS) will generally catch this type of broad scanning. It will then shut it down by blocking the source IP address or alerting someone to the multiple log entries created by a broad, quick scan for open ports. Howe...

Black hats employ several stealth scanning techniques, and one of those threats is the idle scan. Find out more about idle scanning, and learn best practices for protecting your network from this threat. If your organization's intrusion detection system (IDS) identifies a scan of your network, and you just block that IP address, you likely haven't addressed the real threat to your network. Black hats employ several stealth scanning techniques, and one of those threats is the idle scan. Idle scanning is a procedure that involves scanning TCP ports. An attacker will probe a public host with SYN|ACK (synchronization acknowledgement) and receive an RST (reset the connection) response that has t...

The OSI model: Memorize it. It's almost a cliché, but understanding it is critical. TCP/IP concepts: Learn to think in binary and get a firm grasp on bitmasks, subnetting, gateways (like the 'default gateway') and how addresses are constructed (the network portion, the host portion, etc). Stacks: Read about how the network stack is implemented on hosts. Get a good feel for what each component (the NIC, firmware, device drivers, the OS, etc) is responsible for. Once you understand this, troubleshooting is easy. Layer 2: Learn how switches operate and how they're different from hubs and routers. Understand bridging, and get a general idea of what Spanning Tree Protocol does. Learn the differe...

Network security has become a major issue in the environment of internet technology into existence. Firewalls are essential. To assess risk ask the following questions: What is at risk? What is its value? What are the threats? What is the probability of occurrence? Some of the common security risks are as follows: Single point of failure Loose security policies Support protection Limitation of technology False sense of security Weak encryption Latency Here are some firewall/VPN standards to consider : Open architecture Packet filteration Default to denial Auditing capabilities Access control Logging capabilities Intrusion detection Extended user authentication Secured subnets Strong encry...
