As part of a new LEI research project on lean management, I have been visiting with a number organizations well along in lean transformations. I ask the leaders of these initiatives about their methods, their experiences to date, and their trajectories. Then I take a walk along one or more of their value streams to observe performance and to talk with line managers about their perspectives on the lean leap. Here’s a typical story from a recent visit:   Organization A has an ambitious 'lean six-sigma' program for the whole enterprise. As seems to be increasingly common, it is a consolidation of initially separate lean and six-sigma programs into one unified activity, reporting to a vice pres...

The end of cheap clothes is near By Jorn Madslien Business reporter, BBC News Food prices have shot up in response to a surge in crop prices. Now consumers should get ready for clothes prices to follow suit. Garment makers are seeing demand shrink as consumers in the US and Europe are cutting back on spending. US cotton consumption is set to fall 6.5% from last year to less than a million tonnes whilst EU consumption is expected to fall 11% to about 460,000 tonnes, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) predicts. At the same time, they are hit by more expensive raw materials and by soaring oil prices, which make their factories more expensive to operate and which pushes up the cost of shippi...

Probably the retail margins have to reduce in order not to affect the end consumer plus keep the clothing industry alive in the developing world. And the world will definitely need to look at viable synthetic alternates to cotton , as more farms...

The Japanese are magic people. They manage to invent the most extraordinary things... not only in electronics but in almost everything as in this story that we see today. Japanese grocery stores had a problem. They are much smaller than the USA stores and therefore don't have room to waste. Watermelons, big and round, wasted a lot of space. Most people would simply tell the grocery stores that watermelons grow round and there is nothing that can be done about it. But some Japanese farmers took a different approach. If the supermarkets wanted a square watermelon, they asked themselves, How can we provide one? It wasn't long before they invented the square watermelon. It turns out that all you...

Good lessons. I do like the idea of the square watermelons so it could fit in my refrigerator. Hope they start growing them in these parts of the world. Innovations and creations are good regardless how they are defined.
